Tongue Tie & Chiropractic in Hartford, SD

What Is Tongue Tie?

Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition where the strip of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth (the lingual frenulum) is abnormally short, tight, or thick. Lip tie is a similar restriction affecting the upper lip.

These tethered oral tissues can limit tongue and lip movement, directly impacting feeding, latch quality, and, if unaddressed, speech and oral development.

Signs Your Baby May Have a Tongue Tie

Common signs include difficulty latching or maintaining a latch, clicking sounds during feeding, poor weight gain, excessive gas or reflux, maternal nipple pain during breastfeeding, and prolonged or exhausting feeding sessions.

Not all tongue ties are visually obvious. Some are posterior (hidden beneath the tissue) and require hands-on assessment to identify.

The Role of Chiropractic in
Tongue Tie Support

Tongue tie doesn't just affect the mouth. Babies with ties often develop compensatory tension patterns in the jaw, neck, cranium, and upper spine. This tension can interfere with feeding even after a release procedure.

We provide gentle cranial and cervical adjustments to address these tension patterns, both before and after a release, to give your baby the best chance at a successful outcome.

Before and After a Release, How Chiropractic Helps

Before release: Chiropractic helps prepare the body by reducing existing tension in the neck, jaw, and cranium, making the release more effective.

After release: Scar tissue and compensatory patterns can cause a baby to revert to old habits. Post-release chiropractic care supports healing, maintains range of motion, and helps the baby adapt to their new oral function.

Our Collaborative Approach

Tongue tie care works best as a team effort. We collaborate with lactation consultants, pediatric dentists, and ENTs to ensure your baby gets comprehensive support. If you suspect your baby has a tie, we can assess the related tension patterns and refer you to trusted providers for evaluation and release.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does chiropractic help with tongue tie?

Chiropractic addresses the compensatory tension in the jaw, neck, and cranium that develops alongside a tongue tie, improving feeding function and supporting better outcomes before and after a release.

Should my baby see a chiropractor before a tongue tie release?

Yes, when possible. Pre-release chiropractic care reduces existing tension and prepares the body for better healing and adaptation after the procedure.

What are signs of tongue tie in a newborn?

Difficulty latching, clicking during feeds, poor weight gain, excessive fussiness at the breast, and reflux are among the most common signs.

Can chiropractic help breastfeeding after a release?

Yes. Post-release adjustments help the baby adapt to improved tongue and lip mobility, reduce compensatory tension, and support a better latch.
